About this topic

This course takes place value past one thousand, and past zero in the other direction. It opens with counting in sixes, sevens, nines and twenty fives, along with the patterns that let a learner check their own count. The thousands column arrives next, where a four digit number is taken apart and the job of a zero is explained. Finding one thousand more or less follows, including two changes carried out one after the other. Counting back through zero then extends the number line the other way, far enough to measure the gap between two temperatures. Rounding comes next, to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, including numbers that sit exactly on the midpoint. Comparing and ordering follow from the same column by column method, and Roman numerals sit near the end as a different way of writing numbers already met. The final lesson introduces nothing new. It works a stadium problem through in three separate steps, comparing, adding a thousand and then rounding. Every lesson opens with a recap of what the earlier lessons established, names the mistake children usually make, and sets the wrong version beside the right one. Every lesson ends with a quiz, and the course finishes with a final test and one written assignment.

What you will learn

  • Count in multiples of six and seven from zero.
  • Count in multiples of nine, twenty five and one thousand.
  • Use a number pattern to check a step count.
  • State the value of each digit in a four digit number.
  • Partition a four digit number into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
  • Explain the job a zero does inside a number.
  • Find one thousand more or less than a given number.
  • Carry out two changes to a number one after the other.
  • Count backwards through zero into negative numbers.
  • Say which of two negative numbers is smaller.
  • Work out the gap between two temperatures across zero.
  • Round a number to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand.
  • Round a number that sits exactly on the midpoint.
  • Compare two numbers beyond 1000 using greater and less.
  • Order a set of numbers beyond 1000.
  • Read Roman numerals up to one hundred.
  • Build a number such as forty seven from Roman letters.
  • Solve a problem in separate steps using place value and rounding.
