About this topic

This course builds the number sense that the rest of Year 1 Maths rests on. It starts with counting forwards and backwards from any given number, because the fixed order of the number system is what every later lesson depends on. Reading and writing number words comes next, then counting in twos, fives and tens, so equal groups are in place before one more and one less arrive. From there the course moves from spoken counting to seeing quantities, first with objects, ten frames and dots, then on a number line. Comparing two amounts is left until last, because a child who can count on, count back and read a number line has everything needed to say which of two groups holds more. Each lesson teaches one method clearly, then puts it to work on a familiar problem such as socks, coins, a bus or grapes on a plate. Each lesson also names the mistake children usually make at that point, with the wrong version and the right version set side by side, so the error is met and corrected rather than repeated. Every lesson ends with a short quiz answered entirely by tapping, and the course finishes with a final test and one spoken assignment recorded at home in about ten minutes.
