Maths · Upper Key Stage 2 Year 5
Year 5 Number and Place Value
Read, write, compare and order numbers to one million, count in powers of ten, use negative numbers in real settings, round to any place and read Roman numerals to 1000.
About this topic
This course takes place value up to one million and out past zero into negative numbers. It opens with reading and writing six digit numbers, because splitting a long number into groups of three is what every later lesson leans on, and comparing two large numbers follows directly from it. Naming the six columns comes next, along with the question of how many thousands a number really holds. Counting in powers of ten follows, taken as far as the point where a column is already at nine and the change carries left. Negative numbers then arrive in settings the learner already knows, such as temperatures, lift floors and money owed, before counting across zero in both directions to find a rise or a fall. Rounding comes next, to any place asked for, including numbers that sit exactly on the midpoint. Roman numerals finish the course, read as years including MCMXCIX, which uses the same habit of giving every part of a number its value. Every lesson opens with a recap of what the earlier lessons established, names the mistake children usually make, and sets the wrong version beside the right one. Every lesson ends with a quiz, and the course finishes with a final test and one written assignment.
