Maths · Lower Key Stage 2 Year 4
Year 4 Number and Place Value
Count in sixes, sevens, nines and twenty fives, say what each digit in a four digit number is worth, count back past zero, round numbers and read Roman numerals to 100.
About this topic
This course takes place value past one thousand, and past zero in the other direction. It opens with counting in sixes, sevens, nines and twenty fives, along with the patterns that let a learner check their own count. The thousands column arrives next, where a four digit number is taken apart and the job of a zero is explained. Finding one thousand more or less follows, including two changes carried out one after the other. Counting back through zero then extends the number line the other way, far enough to measure the gap between two temperatures. Rounding comes next, to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, including numbers that sit exactly on the midpoint. Comparing and ordering follow from the same column by column method, and Roman numerals sit near the end as a different way of writing numbers already met. The final lesson introduces nothing new. It works a stadium problem through in three separate steps, comparing, adding a thousand and then rounding. Every lesson opens with a recap of what the earlier lessons established, names the mistake children usually make, and sets the wrong version beside the right one. Every lesson ends with a quiz, and the course finishes with a final test and one written assignment.
