About this topic

This course extends place value from tens and ones into hundreds, which is the idea the rest of Year 3 Maths rests on. It opens with counting in fours, eights, fifties and hundreds, along with the patterns that let a learner check their own count. The hundreds column arrives next, where a three digit number is taken apart and each digit given its value. Writing numbers in words follows, including numbers where a zero holds a column open. Then come ten and one hundred more or less, taken as far as the point where a column runs out and ten tens have to swap for a hundred. Comparing and ordering follow from that, then placing a number on a line, first from zero to one thousand and then on a line with different ends. The last lesson introduces nothing new. It solves a two step problem about pencils using only the columns. Every lesson opens with a short recap of what the earlier lessons established, names the mistake children usually make at that point, and shows the wrong version beside the right one. Every lesson ends with a quiz of eight questions, and the course finishes with a final test and one written assignment.
